The Toronto City Council unanimously approved a proposal to name a park at York University after Dan Iannuzzi.
The idea for this tribute to the founder of Corriere Canadese/Tandem had been put forward in a motion tabled by Councillor Peter Li Preti and a petition.
Dan Iannuzzi Park will be located on the York University campus, north of Murray Ross Parkway and west of Sentinel Road.
"The proposal of Dan Iannuzzi Park was approved by the whole City Council," declared Li Preti. "This is a just recognition for a man who gave so much to Canada and to the Italian-Canadian community."
"However, much is left to do," added the councillor.
"Now my commitment shifts to a different side: building a park really worthy of Dan Iannuzzi's stature. I'd like this area to be an active, vibrant place."
After the important step of the approval by the City Council, phase two concerns the beautification of the area. "I'll promote a committee of residents," continued Li Preti, "that will compare ideas with Dan's family: we'll study all available options to get a park reflecting Iannuzzi's immense contribution. Any citizen interested in this intiative can get in touch with me right away."
Li Preti concluded his remarks by recalling the role played by Iannuzzi in the Canadian media industry. "Dan was a giant of journalism, television and communication in general. His contribution, and his legacy, is extremely valuable. That's why naming a park after him, and making it beautiful, seem to me the only right thing to do."
"We are honoured for this important recognition," commented Corriere Canadese/Tandem Editor-in-Chief Elena Caprile, on behalf of the publication and of Multimedia Nova Corporation. "Dan Iannuzzi loved the open spaces, and naming a park after him was a splendid idea. Dan was a man of the media, information and communication were his life: the closeness of this park to York University, a place devoted to knowledge and the circulation of ideas, makes this initiative even worthier."
