Thirty years ago, few people believed in multiculturalism; Dan taught us its real meaning, not only with his words but with his deeds as well. We are now dedicating this park to thank him, once again."
Councillor Peter Li Preti used these words to unveil Dan Iannuzzi Park, established at Murray Ross Parkway and Sentinel Road, in the York University area. "A park that will be alive in summer but also in winter," remarked Li Preti. The area, in fact, will be equipped with a playground and benches, paths for strolling and relaxing and a skating rink that will allow people to enjoy the park even during the cold months.
There's more: a significant project that Li Preti mentioned at the groundbreaking ceremony. "An area of the park will host a Communication Centre, a sort of library, to hold informational material on multiculturalism that will be useful for research. The Centre will have strong connections with York University but won't be reserved for students only."
The idea was welcomed enthusiastically by Corriere Canadese/Tandem Editor-in-Chief Elena Caprile, who attended the ceremony with two of Dan's three children Michael and Doreen Iannuzzi, Dan's brothers Paul and Arnold Iannuzzi; the latter was accompanied by his daughter-in-law Jennifer and son Ted.
"We're honoured and overjoyed by this initiative," commented Lori Abittan, President and CEO of Multimedia Nova Corporation, the company managing Corriere Canadese/Tandem and the other 13 publications of the group. "We want to give our heartfelt thanks to Peter Li Preti, who tenaciously and passionately promoted this project, and the City of Toronto that approved this park named after Dan. This is not just a service to the community, but also the best way to remember the figure of a great man and a great mentor."
The basic project for the park, designed by Gore Andrews (acting director for City Hall), includes three playground areas and a central space with benches where a sculpture in memory of Dan Iannuzzi will be placed. The City Council approved the project and earmarked $250,000 for its implementation.Page 1/...Page 2
