Since losing the U.S. presidential race, former Vice President and Presidential candidate Al Gore has become a tireless crusader in raising awareness about global warming with his lectures. Using elaborate graphics, Gore has done the world-wide circuit with tireless success, and now his efforts have been documented in Davis Guggenheim's amazing film An Inconvenient Truth.
According to Gore, and experts in general, pollution has wrought more drastic changes in a few decades than Earth has seen since the last Ice Age, with truly dire consequences just years ahead. Gore details carefully how global warming works on the atmosphere and illustrates its effects with before-and-after photos of drastically shrunken glaciers, overflowing streams, ozone holes, and more. Though this sounds like heady stuff, the former politician manages to convey this data through accessible and concise means, using slide shows, charts, archival footage and even animation.
Gore has been promoting the film, and received a standing ovation when it was screened at Cannes recently, and deservedly so. His gift as a speaker makes his points credible and persuasive, and though in my case he was preaching to the converted, there is hope that if anyone can convince the direst of right-wingers, it's him.
An Inconvenient Truth is one of those films that should be shown in every high school, in every political office, and in every corporate boardroom. Let's hope the powers that be are listening.
