Another bad movie by television comedians bringing their shtick to the big screen. Bob Odenkirk’s The Brothers Solomon is so bad at goofball comedy that I wanted to rush out of the screening 10 minutes in.
The concept itself is terrible. Brothers John and Dean (Will Arnet and Will Forte respectively) were raised socially inept in the Arctic by their single father, Ed (Lee Majors). After falling into an arbitrary coma, the brothers believe they can wake their dad by giving him a grandchild, so they embark on finding the right woman for an artificial-insemination scheme. Problem is, they don’t know how to approach women, coming up with the most ludicrous ideas. And when one is as dumb as the other, there’s no one to challenge their terrible actions.
When the brothers offer $1,200 for the woman to go ahead with the plan, Janine (Kristen Wiig) offers to be their surrogate. But then the brothers have to decide whom to do the impregnating. Doesn’t help matters that Janine’s violent ex (Chi McBride) comes into the picture, and that John has a crush on the bimbo (Malin Akerman) across the hall. It’s all such a bad idea.
There’s no changes in mood in The Brothers Solomon, nor emotion whatsoever, with actors delivering the worst crocodile tears I’ve seen in years. Then those awful long routines, that don’t work on Saturday Night Live when Forte is writing them. The gags are expected, cheesy, and overstay their welcome time and time again. As to the performances, no one here is ready to take on a major movie role. A very bad choice for everyone.
Stay far away from this one.
