GIBSON DARK FIRE: The legendary Gibson Guitar company recently launched (after a brief delay) this revolutionary new guitar, one they call “the world’s most technologically advanced.” To mark the occasion, the Toronto branch hosted a music industry party that, fittingly, featured a short spirited set from one of Canada’s most popular guitar-driven rock bands, THE TREWS. The Dark Fire will have the ability to recreate any guitar sound in the world, and it also boasts analog, digital, acoustic and self-tuning capabilities. It’s also designed to work seamlessly with the modern computer-based recording studios, so it sounds like a dream instrument for any aspiring JIMI HENDRIX or EDDIE VAN HALEN types. It sports a hefty price tag, of course, but given the limited edition nature of the Dark Fire (just 2,000), it would likely be a better investment than a condo or a luxury car these days.
MAPLE BLUES AWARDS: Produced by the Toronto Blues Society, this is the biggest awards night for the Canadian blues scene, and will be held at The Phoenix on Jan. 19. It is always a musically excellent show, and this one, the 12th, is sure to be no exception. Artists confirmed as performers include RAY BONNEVILLE, JW JONES, Vancouver’s THE SOJOURNERS, and soulful singer/songwriters HARRISON KENNEDY (ex-CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD) and SHAKURA S’AIDA. For more information and tickets, go to info@torontobluessociety.com or call 416-538-3885.
KENNY MACLEAN: Great to see a full house at The Mod Club for the tribute concert for the former PLATINUM BLONDE bassist (and all round good guy). His death last month shocked the local community, and they’ve rallied around to raise funds for Humber College Scholarships in MacLean’s name. Comrades performing at the show included operatic rock diva PATRIZIA (her rendition of “Rage” was a highlight), Platinum Blonde frontman MARK HOLMES, ALLAN FREW (of GLASS TIGER), rocker PARIS BLACK, and new-wavers THE DESERTERS, one of MacLean’s earliest bands. Fronted by TERENCE GOWAN, they played a spirited version of their early ‘80s hit “Alien.” For information on contributing to the scholarships, call 416-675-6622 ext. 5480.Page 1/...Page 2
