International artist Leszek Wyczolkowski comments that Hopkins’ acrylic works on canvas are reminiscent of Picasso.
Wyczolkowski recently saw Surviving Picasso, where Hopkins’ portrayed the artist and observed that Hopkins is a natural. “I knew he must paint because of the way he controlled the brush as it is not something you can teach someone. He instinctively knows how to control the paint and it was evident in the movie that this was a painter’s hand, definitely not an actor portraying an artist.”
A true artist, Hopkins says he paints for the sheer pleasure of it. He often quotes Henry Miller, “Paint what you like and die happy.” Fortunately, Hopkins is painting what he likes and Canadians can now see the work of a true creative genius.
An exhibition of Sir Anthony Hopkins’ acrylics on canvas and works in ink on paper runs May 26 - June 10 at Harbour Gallery, 1697 Lakeshore W. in Mississauga from Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.
