BEBEL GILBERTO: This Brazilian songstress has a large international audience in love with her sultry jazz meets bossa meets pop stylings (her 2000 debut, Tanto Tempo, sold over a million copies). Her new album, All In One, is her most varied yet, with covers of STEVIE WONDER and BOB MARLEY tunes nestling alongside strong new original songs. Expect to hear the new material when Gilberto plays Sound Academy on Nov. 30.
UPCOMING: Promising Cape Breton singer/songwriter CARMEL MIKOL is out touring in support of her new album, In My Bones. Her Toronto date is at The Press Club on Nov. 21, on a double bill with superb local artist ALEJANDRA RIBERA. Known as the grandfather of the British blues scene, JOHN MAYALL is still going strong, in his 70s. See for yourself at The Phoenix on Nov.21. Some of the biggest bands of the ’70s and ’80s keep making the rounds. Avant-garde art-punks DEVO will whip it good at The Phoenix on Nov. 23, while the always cool STEELY DAN play Massey Hall on Nov. 25 and 26. Those of you into fiery blues-fuelled rock ’n’ roll should investigate THE BRITISH COLUMBIANS when they blitz The Horseshoe on Dec. 1.
