Every year children wait for the promising fun of March Break in order to get their first glimpse of a spring free of heavy winter coats and a taste of what the long-awaited summer will bring. This year, the Harbourfront Centre is offering March Break camps and workshops to suit a variety of interests and passions during the week of March 15-19. Activities are geared towards kids three to 16 interested in fashion, digital photography, architecture and theatre.
“Every year we strive to improve the camps and offer more opportunities for young people,” says Melanie Fernandez, director of community and educational programs at the Harbourfront Centre about what is expected this March Break. “Our activities for young people are very successful and when the weather is nice it is a great place to spend the day. We also have the KinderRink, which is an artificial skating surface that can be used in all weather.”
For the first time this year, the Harbourfront Centre is offering a Senior Fine Arts workshop for experienced artists, where participants get to express themselves with experienced instructors as well as guest artists. Students get to sit through detailed demonstrations and use artist-quality materials provided by the Centre. Also new this year is the Pop Star workshop for budding performers and songwriters and the Junior Architects program for the next young Guggenheim.
Eugene Chong, coordinator for camps and Learn to Skate at the Harbourfront Centre talks about the March Break events taking place at the Centre this year.
“We have 14 innovative arts-based programs where we would like the campers to have an enriching experience while making friends and having loads of fun!”
Going beyond fashion, photography and theatre camps, Harbourfront also offers unique experiences such as Dungeons and Dragons Camp, Circus Camp, and Chess Challenge Camp. These camps provide children with a sense of freedom, having them explore different activities that may open a door for future interest.
