Neapolitan Youth Takes Part in Second Annual PIB Sailing Contest

For the second year in a row, Professionisti Italiani a Boston has partnered with Italian sailing powerhouse Mascalzone Latino to give teenagers from underprivileged neighborhoods in Naples the chance to sail on the Charles River.

Guided by instructor Antonio Dell’Omo Beneduce, Salvatore Pistone and Laura Canzanella — both 13 — took part in several sailing events held by local schools Courageous Sailing Center, MIT Sailing Club and Community Boating.

“It was the best experience of my life,” said Laura, who finished the competition with the best time. “This experience has taught me that if I really want something, I have to work and study very hard,” said Salvatore.

To provide a positive spark is the ultimate goal for PIB, which organizes cultural and networking events throughout the year.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on June 28, PIB coordinator Giovanni Abbadessa praised the kids’ efforts.

“You have helped us demonstrate how — despite Italy’s current difficulties — there are always valid reasons to recognize our talents around the world,” Abbadessa said.

The event was made possible thanks to the generous support of Euno Restaurant and Lynn-based Sauces ’n’ Love, as well as the families who hosted the young sailors during their Boston trip: Giovanni and Maria Luisa Saraceni, Frank Facella, Kevin and Luisa Harris. (piboston.org)
